Barbara Grunewald
Originally from Switzerland, I have recently joined ACCA as Senior Research Officer. My main responsibilities include managing ACCA’s Research Committee, commissioning research through international calls for expression of interests and calls for research, evaluating proposals, conducting management reviews of research reports, contributing to publications for key stakeholders, and representing ACCA at national and international research conferences.
Prior to joining ACCA, I gained experience in the international development sector, where I worked for governmental agencies and non-governmental organisations in Switzerland, Cuba and Brazil, in the area of sustainable economic development, human rights, and public health. Before that, I worked in financial services in communications and marketing. I hold a Master’s degree in English Language and Literature, Economics, and International Law, and a degree in International Development.

My main interests lie in the area of sustainability, social and environmental reporting, accountability in the not-for-profit sector, anti-corruption, and good governance, and I look forward to receiving many exciting research ideas from researchers around the world in the near future.
I manage ACCA’s international programme of commissioned research projects, research-led debates and round tables. With a background as an academic researcher working on European Commission funded projects, I understand the value of research in informing policy development. Here at ACCA, one of my key responsibilities is developing and widening outreach for ACCA’s Research Programme around the world.
Supporting ACCA members and their employers worldwide, we are firmly committed to generating evidence that informs the development of the accounting and finance profession, influences policy and engages practice.
Our research and research-led activities continue to attract the attention of research users from governments, policymakers, standard-setters as well as in industry and practice. Recent ACCA research events have engaged the support of – for example – Lord McKenzie, Department for Work and Pensions Lords Minister; Sir George Cox; Rt Hon Theresa May, Shadow Leader of the House of Commons and Shadow Minister for Women; Gilbert Gélard, Member of the IASB; and David Frost, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce.
I am looking forward to further successes, working collaboratively with colleagues at partner organisations such as IFAC, FEE, ESRC and the IAAER to generate impact among research users for ACCA’s future innovative research-driven initiatives.
