From time to time, ALT-N will provide summaries of articles which have been published in English on the SURF E-learning Theme Site (http://elearning.surf.nl/e-learning/english). Links to PDFs of the work and contact details will be provided.
The E-learning Theme Site focuses on developments in Dutch institutions of higher education. It publishes information on practical evaluations, instruments, and research results related to Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and educational innovation. The site also contains discussions about leading publications and websites. It is aimed at all Learning Technologists involved in the use of ICT in educational innovation. An archive of the newsletters can be found at http://elearning.surf.nl/e-learning/english/3140. The site is an initiative of the SURF Foundation, the higher education and research partnership organisation for network services and information and communications technology (ICT) in the Netherlands (www.surf.nl/en). Thesis by Tamara Van Gog: No ability without knowledge!
Beginners do not learn to solve problems by solving problems. Research conducted by Tamara van Gog, staff member of the Educational Technology Expertise Centre of the Open Universiteit Nederland, demonstrates that absolute beginners learn most when examples are process oriented. In April 2006 she defended her thesis, entitled 'Uncovering the problem-solving process to design effective worked examples'.

De Laat's thesis has also been reviewed by advisor Fieke Roozen at the request of the SURF Theme site’s editorial board. Roozen is also actively involved in Networked Learning in her PhD track at Delft University of Technology. The review is in English and available from:

Thesis by P.J. Beers: Knowledge is the root of incomprehension
Pieter Jelle Beers, staff member of the Educational Technology Expertise Centre of the Open Universiteit Nederland, investigated possible means of supporting multidisciplinary teams in coming to a shared view of a particular problem in order to be able to solve it better. In November 2005 he defended his thesis, entitled ‘Negotiating common ground: tools for multidisciplinary teams’.
