DO sensor still clean after 18 months operation Moving from manual or flow based control systems to dissolved oxygen based systems has been show to result in energy savings of up to 25%. Dissolved oxygen control in the aeration process works by applying only enough air for the biological process to function efficiently. A typical dissolved concentration is 2ppm.

An important additional benefit of accurate control is improved process efficiency and consistent clarifier operation.
 
The key to optimisation of the aeration process is accurate, but much more importantly, reliable D.O. monitoring. The signals from on-line D.O. equipment provide the basic control parameter required for blower control. With dependable control inputs, aeration equipment can be modulated to maintain D.O. values at optimum levels. 

Galvanic, polarographic, membraned, non membraned or optical. Whatever the sensor type if they are dirty they do not give accurate readings. A dirty sensor will either read low or not at all. This causes the system to over aerate and leads to a waste of energy.  Studies in the UK and USA indicate that each ppm error in dissolved oxygen measurement results in a 12-15% increase in electricity costs.

The key to reliable measurement is keeping the sensor clean. Manual cleaning is expensive and time consuming and cannot be undertaken frequently enough to give the reliability needed for control.
 
The ATi AutoClean dissolved oxygen monitor can be programmed to clean itself from once every hour to once every day. When the sensor is kept clean it reads maintains an accuracy of better than 0.1ppm
