Turnaround on Car Seat Safety?
We asked the supremely knowledgeable and helpful team at Babyworld for their advice on choosing a rear-facing car seat, as they are surprisingly hard to find on the high street, and are more expensive than forward-facing versions. You might also find it useful to visit www.rearfacing.co.uk which is a source of some very useful information.
Brio Zento (£199.99) This has been the best-selling car seat in Scandinavia for the last 5 years. The seat is fitted using the adult seat belt (Babyworld recommend having it professional fitted as it is fiddly). This model is highly rated for comfort, safety testing and ergonomic features (ie 5 point harness, 5 reclining positions etc), and gives you the flexibility to switch to forward-facing when necessary. Available from www.babyworld.co.uk.
Britax Multi-Tech (£129.99) This seat is also fitted using the adult seat belt. It's slightly smaller than the Brio and can also be turned around to forward-facing later on. Available from Baby & Co in Bristol www.babyandco.com. They also recommend you book an appointment for car seat fitting as it can take up to an hour to find the right car for the right car.
Recaro Polaric (£220) The seat is fixed via Isofix locating points and has two belts at the rear. It is additionally secured at the front seat of the vehicle and fixed using a latch fastener to the backrest. Available from the Devon Pram Centre in Honiton www.devonpramcentre.co.uk.
BeSafe iZi Combi(£250) This model is easy to install using Isofix points. Its height is perfect for enabling children to see out of the side and rear windows. However, it does need quite a bit of space (see table below) - so it is best suited for use in large cars. Also very expensive compared to other seats. Available from a nursery goods store in Dorset called Snowflakes www.prams-pushchairs.co.uk (in fact they have become a specialist rear-facing car seat retailer).

Isofix attachments are installed in all cars from 2006 onwards, but it is not recommended that you have them retro-fitted.
