The Strategic Forum for Construction (SFfC) launched the Construction Commitments in June 2008 which have since been endorsed by all the main government spending departments. The Construction Commitments have since been further supported by the launch of the Clients’ Commitments in November 2008 by the Construction Clients’ Group (CCG), and the addition of their 32 members has taken the total number of signatories for the 2012 Construction Commitments, the Construction Commitments and the Clients’ Commitments through the 500 milestone.
As a next step the SFfC will this week launch a new campaign to encourage the rest of the industry to follow suit. Strategic Forum members will be encouraging all their company members to sign up and aim to get the message to the widest possible industry audience. Sign up can be undertaken on-line at http://www.strategicforum.org.uk/cc.shtml
The Rt. Hon Nick Raynsford MP added that ‘We want to see the industry’s clients, along with the consultants, main contractors, specialist contractors, and manufacturers and suppliers all sign up to the Construction Commitments and follow through the principles in the Commitments on their projects. The Construction Commitments bring together the six key areas vital to delivering high quality and sustainable construction projects on time, safely and to budget. They represent the principles which it is intended will underpin all construction projects in order to achieve a better industry and exceed current best practise. In support of this the Strategic Forum has set a number of key targets which will demonstrate the improvements that the industry is making as a result of the adoption of these Commitments’.
Peter Cunningham, Chief Executive of the Construction Clients’ Group, advised “The Construction Commitments were integral to updating our best practice guidance for our members and were the foundation for developing the Clients’ Commitments. We will now complement the Clients’ Commitments framework with tools and training to enable any client to implement the principles outlined in the six areas of the Commitments.”
Following their launch at the CCG’s annual conference last year, all CCG members have now signed up to the Clients’ Commitments. An integral part of this process is to encourage their supply chain partners to also sign up to the Construction Commitments. It is planned that project performance will be measured and a diagnostic tool will be introduced to assess behavior in accordance with the Commitments principles.
