SYMBIAN AND MICROSOFT COMPETE FOR SMART PHONE LEADERSHIP
by Wireless Asia Pacific
The SonyEricssson P800 - A Symbian device

Symbian and Microsoft are competing head-on in Korea, which is fast emerging as the largest mobile production base in the world. The companies are hoping to take leadership in the market for operating systems of smart phones.

Having designated Teleca Korea as one of the 'Symbian technology authorisation centers', Symbian recently stepped up marketing campaigns targeting leading mobile handset makers such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics as well as wireless communication carriers such as SK Telecom.

Under an apparent strategy of setting up a stronghold in Korea for Asia-Pacific market, Symbian is aiming to provide technology support to mobile handset manufacturers of Korea and China as well as engineering consulting to mobile solution and content providers.

Microsoft plans to push comprehensive marketing of its 'Windows Mobile' for smart phones by targeting mobile makers, wireless communication carriers, solution firms and application developers. Support programs for mobile makers such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and Cyber Bank, will be explored by the company.
