Almonds are a growing trend in new product development. Healthy snacking is an identified areas of opportunity.
The almond forecast for the 2008-2009 crop year is 1.50 billion meat pounds up 3% from May 7, 2008.
Richard Waycott, the Almond Board of California’s President and CEO, commented: “This forecast continues the upward trend established in the 2006/2007 indicating the possibility of another record crop year.
The California almond industry is well positioned to meet the ever-growing global demand for almonds.” Two thirds of California’s almonds are destined for export, with 53% of exports reaching Western Europe in June, a 24% increase over the previous year.
Waycott added: “The strong position of almonds in terms of global supply and consumer demand makes it an extremely attractive ingredient for new product developers in all categories from confectionery to bakery to ice cream.
The Almond Board continues to monitor consumer trends to identify areas of opportunity, such as healthy snacking, which is a growing trend in Europe as manufacturers respond to the European Commission’s 2007 White Paper on Obesity.”
