Somerfiled sold, the background story
Deal does little to change the retail landscape
The Co-op paid a low purchase price for Somerfiled, 6.7 times Somerfield's earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation, well below the 9.5 times multiple for Tesco shares, or the 8 times multiple for Morrison shares.
However, the owners still managed to double their initial £400m equity investment, which is likely to please their investors and creditors in an environment where profitable exits are few and far between for private equity. More on this story from the FT
