PepsiCo Off To A Flying Start
Ambitions to go green
PepsiCo UK & Ireland (PIUK), the makers of such well-known snacks as Tropicana juice, Walkers crisps and Quaker oats, may be a latecomer to environmental reporting, but its first sustainability report shows the firm is now addressing the issues with gusto.
The impressive report, released last month, shows that PIUK recognises climate change as both a threat and an opportunity to its business, which employs more than 5,500 people across 13 sites, one of which is the largest crisp manufacturing plant in the world, in Leicester.
Indeed, PIUK appears to have adopted a genuinely strategic view on environmental sustainability. Throughout 2006 and 2007, the firm worked with the Carbon Trust to measure the carbon footprint of a packet of Walkers crisps over its entire lifecycle, from planting the potatoes, to the pack arriving in store, through to disposal of the empty packet. This work culminated in the newly launched Carbon Trust Carbon Reduction Label being displayed on the crisp packets – the first carbon label in the world. More on this story
