Beverage News... Vijay Mallya's United Breweries Group In Talks With Diageo
Vijay Mallya's United Breweries Group, Rimon Winery, Arniston Bay, South African wine producers, Maxxium UK, Heineken International, Bushmills Irish Whiskey, United Breweries, Gordon’s gin, InBev
Vijay Mallya's United Breweries Group has confirmed that it is in talks with Diageo over a possible partnership in India. The confirmation by company president Vijay Rekhi comes after ongoing speculation that Diageo may buy a stake in UB. "We have begun an exploratory dialogue with Diageo to identify partnership opportunities," Rekhi said. "We have entered into exclusive discussions with Diageo."
A Diageo spokesperson said that the company "is reviewing a possible collaboration" with United Spirits.
Rimon Winery, the pomegranate winery from the heart of Galilee, has launched a new pomegranate desert wine. The unique blend invites wine lovers to think outside the ‘wine’ box and discover the taste and benefits of the modern day ‘super-fruit’ transformed into a fine wine. This new and innovative pomegranate dessert wine is made purely from 100% pomegranate with no added sugar. A light and sweet wine with fruity aromas and ripe cherry flavours. The pomegranates’ contain natural sugars - equivalent to that of grape varieties used for standard winemaking. Each of the Rimon wines are produced using traditional winemaking techniques – preserving the pomegranate flavours and uber-healthy attributes (antioxidants, vitamins and minerals)
Arniston Bay is to relaunch its Original range in the UK with screwcaps and new packaging. The relaunch is part of an overall strategy to "expand and innovate" the entire Arniston Bay portfolio, the company said today (17 November). The first to receive the revamp will be Chenin Chardonnay 2008, Pinotage Rose 2008 and Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2008. The new packaging will be available in the UK grocery trade from December with an RRP of £5.29.
South African wine producers have warned that suppliers' ethical concerns may be forgotten after Tesco changed its trading terms. One supplier told Off Licence News that the firm's demands are "a threat to [its] sustainability". The source said: "It's not just about treating employees decently, we also have to remunerate them properly. In order to have something flowing back, we need some sort of return in the marketplace."
Maxxium UK is launching mixability POS kits for the on-trade in a bid to boost sales of its Sourz range. The Sourz mixing kits are part of a £4m investment this year to reposition Sourz as a "mixable spirit" and broaden appeal among target consumers - female and male drinkers aged 21-35, the company said. The kits focus on three signature serves.
Heineken International has launched a digital responsible drinking campaign called 'Know The Signs' in an effort to encourage more informed choices and better drinking habits among irresponsible drinkers. The marketing push, an extension of the 'Enjoy Heineken Responsibly' programme, will use both internet and mobile telephone technology. Heineken claims the campaign, which is created by Red Brick Road, is the first of its type in the alcohol communication arena.
Join Bushmills Irish Whiskey in toasting the 400th anniversary of the royal licence to distil whiskey being granted to the Bushmills area in 1608, with two gifts for the Christmas season. Bushmills has released a special limited edition Irish whiskey, Bushmills 1608, to celebrate the anniversary. Available in Selfridges and selected whiskey specialists, Bushmills 1608 has a suggested retail price of £49. Winner of Whisky Magazine’s Innovator of the Year Award, Bushmills 1608 is a unique blend of tradition and innovation. It combines some classic features of Bushmills whiskeys (such as triple distillation, the use of fully malted barley and maturation in the finest quality Sherry oak casks) with a pioneering process: it was distilled with crystal malt, a special type of malted barley selected to deliver exceptional smoothness.
United Breweries, the Indian group owned by Vijay Mallya, the businessman and politician, yesterday said it had entered "exclusive" talks with Diageo about the sale of a stake in United's spirits business, reports the Financial Times. Diageo is understood to be one of several international spirits companies that has held talks with United, which is looking to raise cash for its Kingfisher Airlines, which has been making losses.
InBev NV secured approval from the U.S. Justice Department to buy Anheuser-Busch Cos. by agreeing to sell Labatt USA, a small, 55-person sales arm of the Belgian-Brazilian beer titan. The decision moved InBev another step closer to acquiring the iconic American brewer for $52 billion in an all-cash deal that will create the world's largest brewer by sales.
To celebrate the festive season, the makers of Gordon’s gin have teamed up with Gordon Ramsay to create The Ramsay G&T – a fresh twist on the classic gin and tonic featuring a dash of cranberry juice. The Ramsay G&T will be available at Gordon Ramsay’s Taste of Christmas - a celebration of the best in Christmas food, drink and entertaining - at London’s ExCel centre from 4-7 December. At the show’s Spirit and Wine Theatre, guests can also learn how to match and serve Gordon’s gin with a variety of Christmas dishes.
