Down The Aisle... Bakkavör £150m Trapped Money
Bakkavör, Icelandic Glacial, China says finds tainted European food products, Dr Oetker UK, Northern Foods, Unilever, The Del Monte Foods Company
Bakkavör, the UK's largest producer of fresh prepared food and ready meals, is in talks with its banks over £150m it has trapped in a failed Icelandic bank. The deposit is trapped in Kaupthing, an Icelandic bank that collapsed in October, say people familiar with the situation, putting the company at risk of breaching some technical conditions in its debt covenants with its banking syndicate.
Leading CarbonNeutral certified bottled water, Icelandic Glacial is flying high after signing an exclusive 3 year in-flight deal with Europe’s largest business jet operator; NetJets Europe. The premium and environmentally conscious natural mineral water will be available in the form of 1 litre and 330ml bottles on all NetJets Europe flights, touching down at over 870 airports across the continent.
Chinese product safety authorities have seized several batches of contaminated European food imports, and are also recalling all Irish pork products following a tainting scare there, the government said on Monday. China has been beset by food safety scandals in the past few years, including a recent mass contamination of infant formula by the chemical Melamine in which at least six babies are believed to have died.
Dr Oetker UK has signed a deal to buy The Schwan Food Company's European frozen pizza business. The deal, which includes the Chicago Town brand, will see Dr Oetker acquire the company's UK pizza plant, Schwan's business in 15 European countries, and licences for the Freschetta and Tony's trademarks. Schwan said it will focus more on the "continued development" of its North American business in the future. Dr Oetker will integrate the UK pizza plant, Leyland into its UK division.
UK food group Northern Foods has signed a deal with British Airways to supply in-flight meals for the airline with meals and sandwiches on short-haul flights from Heathrow. Northern ousted former provider Gate Gourmet to land the 10-year contract, which signals the company’s first significant departure outside its traditional customer base. Earlier this week it emerged that Northern, the UK’s largest manufacturer of ready meals, had been in talks with a number of major rail franchises about providing meals and snacks for passengers. “We are actively pursuing a number of opportunities, investing £500,000 in the first half-year in projects to develop the business in new related areas,” the company said in a statement.
Unilever, a supplier of consumer goods, has completed the sale of its edible oil business in Cote d'Ivoire together with its interests in local oil palm plantations, Palmci and PHCI. At the same time it has acquired the soap business of Cosmivoire, an Ivorian producer with a market presence in Francophone West Africa.
The Del Monte Foods Company has reported a net income of $50.4 million, or $0.25 per diluted share, for the second quarter ended October 26, 2008, compared to $25.9 million, or $0.13 per diluted share, for the same period of 2007.
