Supermarket News... Discount Frozen Food Stores Sales Soar
Farm Foods, Iceland, Sainsbury's recall, Morrisons, Tesco second biggest in the world, Morrisons and Asda petro price, Irish pork products, The Co-operative Group, Morrisons
Iceland, the northern-based frozen food chain Farm Foods and other freezer centres recorded sales growth of some 11%. The frozen food boom comes after years of decline, but shoppers are being lured back by low prices and less waste.
The UK's Food Standards Agency has announced that supermarket chain Sainsbury's has issued a recall of its own-brand cooked wafer thin chicken. According to the agency, this is a precautionary measure by Sainsbury's, as traces of milk protein have been found in a sample of the product, which is not mentioned on the packaging. The recalled own-brand cooked wafer thin chicken weighs 70 grams and has date codes up to and including December 22.
Morrisons will begin using a merchandising system from Galleria next year to automate the creation of merchandising plans. Currently the supermarket chain creates these plans manually. The system will connect its assortment and space planning business processes, and contain store-specific fixture, space and product performance data. Morrisons will be able to create merchandise plans that optimise the range and inventory at the store level and fit the exact space available. It will also be able to define each category at the enterprise, cluster or store-specific level.
Retail giant Tesco is set to overtake Carrefour as the second largest retailer in the world in the next five years, according to new research.
Morrisons have cut the cost off by up to 5p at all its pumps and will be selling diesel at 99.9p a litre. Motoring group AA welcomed the news, predicting that other retailers would now follow suit. Later, supermarket chain Asda said that from Tuesday it was reducing the price of its diesel to 99.9p a litre, with petrol coming down to 87.9p a litre. Supermarkets have been leading the way in cutting the price of petrol, with Morrisons being the first to drop unleaded below the £1-a-litre mark in October and under 90p last month. The announcement sees the chain knocking the price of diesel down by between 3p and 5p on its forecourts across the UK.
Supermarkets across the UK have withdrawn Irish pork products from sale after suspected contamination with dioxins. The British Retail Consortium (BRC) said they had withdrawn the "very small proportion" of Irish pork they had in stock, following advice from the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
The Co-operative Group has identified buyers for 24 stores identified as part of the regulatory process relating to its proposed acquisition of Somerfield. Buyers of these stores include the Musgrave Group, Tesco, Spar, Morrisons and Lidl.
Morrisons has revealed that like-for-like sales (ex-fuel) increased by 8.1% over the 13 weeks to 2nd November, with total sales (ex-fuel) increasing by 9.5%. Critical to this strong level of performance has been an increased focus on delivering value for money through its 'Price Crunch' campaign, and continued investment in the fresh food offer.
