Supermarket News... Hum Bug Tesco To Open Boxing Day
Tesco, Aldi, Somerfield, Tesco and Waitrose, Tesco £25m of discounts, Waitrose drop in sales, SPAR, Waitrose

Tesco is breaking its tradition of giving most staff two days holiday over Christmas with plans to open nearly 200 of its biggest stores on Boxing Day as it fights for business in a worsening UK retail climate. Britain’s biggest retailer said it would open all its 179 Extra stores and 10 Homeplus stores on Boxing Day.

They were billed as the saviours of the economic downturn, packing their shelves with cheap 'no-frills' food to help hard-up consumers through the credit crunch. But research shows that some budget food stores are actually more expensive than the 'big four' supermarkets when it comes to groceries. It found discount chain Aldi charged the most for a basket of basic shopping items, including bread, toilet rolls, washing-up liquid and wine, while Asda worked out the cheapest.

Somerfield posted like-for-like sales growth of 5.4% in the six months to 8 November 2008, the retailer said today. Year-on-year sales growth was 2.5% to 28 April, while the previous year sales dipped 2.4%.

Tesco and Waitrose
have become the latest supermarkets to agree to buy stores off the Co-operative group (Co-op) so its purchase of Somerfield can go ahead. It is understood Tesco will take 15 venues and Waitrose 13. Regulator the Office of Fair Trading said the Co-op must sell 26 stores before the acquisition is finalised to ease competition concerns, according to Property Week. In total the co-op must ultimately sell 126 stores under the terms of the deal. Last week it was reported that Morrisons plans to buy 38 stores off the Co-op.And Somerfield today revealed that it posted like-for-like sales growth of 5.4% in the six months to the start of November.

Tesco will give each of its’ 268,000 staff – from checkout workers to head office executives – a share of a package worth up to £25m of discounts, in the form of ‘Thank You’ discount vouchers. The amount given will depend on the employees length of service. All staff will also be entitled to special offers on products sold in store, including discounts of £5 for every £25 spent on clothes, £5 for £15 spent on books and £2.50 for £10 spent on toys and games.

Waitrose suffer its first drop in sales for more than five years. Sales at the grocery chain dropped 0.7% to £761.7m for the 12 weeks to November 30 - the first drop since August, 2003, according to industry researchers TNS Worldpanel. Data revealed Waitrose suffered a fall in market share, to 3.6%, down from 3.8% this time last year and its all-time high of 4.1%. TNS said Waitrose - owned by the John Lewis Partnership - was being hit as consumers switched to cheaper alternatives. Meanwhile, Morrisons and Asda have seen sales surge. TNS said Morrisons had increased its market share to 11.8% from 11.4% last year. Asda's share of the market rose to 16.8% from 16.6%, while Sainsbury's maintained its 16 %share. Aldi and Lidl continued their fast pace of growth, with market shares of 3.1% and 2.4% respectively.

400 SPAR retailers, suppliers, RDC and CO personnel heard from Jerry Marwood at the 28th SPAR National Guild Convention in Scottsdale Arizona, how many in the SPAR retail and wholesale business have worked their way successfully through a recession, inflation and food shortages in the past and how SPAR is ready and optimistic about future challenges.

Nottingham city centre is the location Waitrose have chosen to open its first convenience store. The 5,800sq ft store will open at Trinity Square in the city and will trade from 7.30am to 9pm on weekdays and Saturdays, with Sunday trading restricted to 11am to 5pm.
