Down The Aisle... Birds Eye's Profits Up
Birds Eye Iglo, Heinz Snap Pots, Tate & Lyle, Labelling, Arla & First Milk, The cost of fresh fruit and vegetables, Frutarom, Regulate the food industry Tapas in a Box

Birds Eye Iglo has emerged from 2008 as one of the few consumer-facing companies to benefit from the flight to frugality by anxious Britons, with sales and profits up for the year. The privately owned food producer, which was bought by Permira 18 months ago, has managed to increase sales in the UK by 5% in 2008, while earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation grew 10% over the year.

One year on from its launch, Heinz Snap Pots has taken the beans, kids and meals market by storm, generating retail sales in excess of £12 million and securing 95% distribution. Heinz Beanz Snap Pots alone has generated more than £10m of sales in the first year, which has assisted Heinz Beanz value growth of +11%1 yoy. The launch has driven category value with 52% of the volume being incremental to the total beans category, resulting in the product adding 295k buyers to the sector. The Kids market has reached a value of £58 million, having grown by +7.5% over the last year. This growth has been driven by Heinz Hoops Snap Pots, which has achieved £1.8m value sales to date and a 4% value share of the kids accompaniment sector, bringing Heinz's overall share of the Kids market to 74.7%, +12.3% on last year.

Tate & Lyle
shareholder Harbinger, the aptly named activist hedge fund, could sell its stake in the sugar giant – news that prompted a slump in Tate & Lyle's share price.

Conservative MEP Chris Heaton-Harris called on his colleagues to throw out proposals on labelling at the European Commission, brandishing the rules as ‘barmy’. The proposed new rules, will see nutritional information and Guideline Daily Amounts become mandatory on packaging, but Mr Heaton-Harris warned labels will end up becoming too confusing if they are introduced. The rules will also require nutritional information to be printed in a far bigger font – no smaller than 3mm – which would take up more of the packaging than before.

Arla dropped its standard litre price by 2ppl from January 5 while First Milk cut 1.25ppl from January 1. Arla cites a falling commodities market – the effects of which it says it absorbed in the second half of 2008 - while First Milk mentions the European milk price slide which it says is now affecting the UK. Nevertheless, Dairy UK, which does not itself get involved in ‘milk price debate’, remains fairly positive for the industry’s future saying the bleak mixture of difficult trading conditions, high input prices and further regulation will not last for ever.

The cost of fresh fruit and vegetables will soar this year as European farmers shun the plunging pound. British importers believe shoppers will face increases as high as 20% in coming weeks, with some produce disappearing from our shelves altogether. All sorts of fresh produce is affected but potatoes, onions and tomatoes are particularly at risk from fluctuating prices.

Israeli flavours and ingredients group Frutarom has acquired the assets and business of UK company Oxford Chemicals. The £8m acquisition of the speciality ingredients company will be financed through a long-term bank loan and paid in full in cash at completion, the company said in a statement.

The Government is threatening to regulate the food industry to stop firms promoting unhealthy eating habits among the nation's seven million schoolchildren, the Health minister, Ben Bradshaw,  has warned. He described as "completely unacceptable" a claim promoted in a pack sent to schools by the European Snack Association – which is sponsored by Pringles, KP and Walkers – that a bag of crisps was healthier than an apple. However, speaking on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme, he said that at present it was up to schools whether or not they used the pack.

Against the grain of weak retail performance this Christmas, Spanish food and catering specialist Tapas in a Box has recorded a 200% increase in year-on-year online sales of the company’s home entertainment tapas selections, plus excellent performance from its recently formed catering operation. Co-Proprietor Alastair Middleton said “We had high hopes for December, because it’s the party season, and tapas is the party food, but we’ve been stunned by the demand. It seems word of mouth is spreading, and people have a taste for something different: authentic, quickly-prepared, high-quality tapas selections that are full of variety – just right for convivial gatherings at home.”
