Healthy New Year!
New research commissioned by Uncle Ben’s
Healthy eating is the number one New Year’s resolution for 2009
Brits are becoming increasingly conscious about the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle with nearly 8 in 10 (77%) planning to eat more healthily in the New Year, new research commissioned by Uncle Ben’s® released has reveals.
According to the detailed report which uncovered attitudes towards making New Year’s resolutions, eating more healthily is the most popular personal pledge for 2009, closely followed by taking up more exercise and joining the gym.
The study of 3,000 adults also revealed that in the current economic climate, managing personal finances is of high importance with over half (54%) planning to cut back on personal spending and more than 6 in ten (63%) intending to save more money. Almost 4 in ten (38%) are also planning to control spending by budgeting their money in advance, on a weekly or monthly basis.
When it comes to healthy eating, over a third (37%) would be encouraged to try healthy food if it tasted good and fell within their meal budget. 2 out of ten (26%) consider convenience to be the most important factor, and would be more likely to eat healthy food if it was quick to prepare.
However it seems some are doubtful about their chances of succeeding, with over half (55%) of those surveyed not expecting to keep their New Year’s resolutions at all. Almost a third (32%) feel they often set unrealistic goals and nearly 3 out of ten (29%) never really intend to keep their resolutions in the first place. This trend could be explained by the way people keep a record of their resolutions, with the vast majority (74%) admitting to only making a mental note, as opposed to writing it down or sharing with someone else.
And if we could keep up just one New Year’s resolution, taking up more exercise and joining gym came top (23%) closely followed by eating more healthily (20%).
Life Coach and Psychotherapist Christine Webber, comments: “The beginning of any year is a landmark time and many of us decide to make a positive change to our life. But all too often, new and good intentions do not last the month – let alone the year because they are too big, overwhelming or unrealistic. The answer is to make resolutions that are realistic and that can be carried out and achieved in a step-by-step way.”
Nutritionist, Sian Porter continues: “It is great news that so many people are planning to lead a healthier lifestyle in 2009. Healthy food doesn’t need to be bland or expensive - stir fries are a quick and easy way to ensure you keep a healthy balanced diet and meet the government’s recommendation of eating five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Uncle Ben’s range of Stir Fry sauces and Wok Rice are a fantastic way to create lots of tasty, quick, easy and nutritious meals in just one pan that all the family will love. Because Uncle Ben’s contains only wholesome ingredients, with no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives, you can feel reassured your family is eating a healthy meal.”
