Down The Aisle... Northern Foods Q3 Sales Up After Solid Christmas Trading
Northern Foods, Premier Foods, The Food and Drink Innovation Network, Findus frozen food, Bakkavör, Procter & Gamble, Thorntons
Northern Foods said underlying group sales for the third quarter increased 3% and that it was confident of meeting full year expectations after a robust Christmas trading performance. The group, which is the biggest supplier of food to Marks & Spencer, said year to date underlying sales were 3.5% ahead of last year, reflecting good progress in a challenging environment and the successful recovery of higher commodity costs.
Premier Foods is expected to announce a continuation of the healthy sales trend seen in the 4 months to October, when sales were up 9%.
Derbyshire firms involved in the food and drink sector are being urged to take advantage of a £250,000 pot of cash that can help them develop their business ideas. The Food and Drink Innovation Network, backed by the East Midlands Development Agency, is looking for eligible companies to benefit from an innovation support grant. The grants are for small and medium-sized businesses, which employ fewer than 250 people.
Newcastle Production, the company that makes and distributes all Findus frozen food products in the UK, has filed for administration. The company threw in the towel after becoming the latest victim of the financial turmoil in Iceland, with backer Landsbanki having collapsed last year.
Ready meals manufacturer Bakkavör has announced plans to restructure three sites in Lincolnshire as it moves to cut capacity in the face of falling demand. GMB union officials say the cuts could result in up to 400 of the 2,000 staff at the sites being made redundant. Some production at the affected sites - Exotic Farm Produce in Kirton, Freshcook in Holbeach and Bakkavör Spalding - would be transferred to other sites while other facilities would be consolidated.
Procter & Gamble is planning a major consolidation of its laundry range, which will see all of its liquid and tablet formats scrapped over the next five years. The move comes as P&G prepares to launch new gel formats across Bold, Daz and Fairy this summer, following the launch of Ariel Excel Gel in October. The new strategy will reduce the P&G detergent range to the new gel formats, powders and liquitabs across those four brands.
Thorntons has become the latest major name to suffer a Christmas slump after announcing a drop in like-for-like sales of almost 7% in its latest quarterly results. Sales dropped by 6.6% on a like-for-like basis in the 12 weeks to 27 December, with overall sales down by 2.3% to £77.6m for the period. Thorntons said it expects total profits for the six months to 10 January to be around £7m from pre-tax earnings of £14m.
