Supermarket News... Well Done Aldi
Aldi UK, Tesco, Morrisons, Iceland Foods, Tesco distribution centre, Asda, Sainsbury’s, The Co-operative Group
Aldi UK confirmed its position as one of the few winners from Britain’s economic downturn, with sales up by a 25% over the past year as wealthier Britons flocked to the discount retailer’s stores. The German chain, which has struggled to make inroads into the UK market since landing on British shores in the early 1990s, said the brand had built momentum over 2008 as shoppers, mindful of tightening household budgets, decided to try out shopping at the hard discounter’s stores.
Sainsbury's is to open a further five smaller-format stores by the end of March as part of its push into the convenience sector. The first is to launch in Worksop, Nottinghamshire on Thursday.
Tesco reported a 2.5% rise in underlying sales for the seven weeks to January 10, which analysts expect to be the weakest Christmas performance from the top four supermarket groups. Group sales were up 11.6%. Finance Director Andrew Higginson said "In this market to have grown the business by 11.6% -- I can't imagine any big retailers who will report comparable numbers. Tesco's underlying sales growth was driven largely by volumes, rather than price increases as at many of its rivals.' Higginson said Tesco expected to create around 10,000 jobs in the UK this year.
Morrisons has announced plans to create 5,000 new jobs in 2009 as part of its expansion programme. While the locations of the fresh positions have not yet been confirmed, Morrisons said 18,000 staff members will be working towards qualifications under its Fresh Food Academy initiative. Many of the new jobs are on its Market Street counters and include the areas of bakery, fishmongery and butchery.
Iceland Foods has bought 51 of the 800 stores from the now defunct Woolworths group. "Iceland will be creating in the region of 2,500 jobs across the country in the coming year," said the frozen food chain. The acquisition comes some four months after Iceland and owner Baugur, then Woolworths' largest shareholder, had its £50m takeover approach rejected.
Tesco have said that shoppers defied the credit crisis by "trading up" to luxury food in unprecedented numbers over the Christmas period. Despite rebranding itself as "Britain's biggest discounter" in the autumn, Tesco will say that sales of its Finest range of high-end products spiked over the three-week Christmas period, before falling back last week.
Tesco is to open a state-of-the-art distribution centre at Pilning (near Avonmouth). The new depot will replace an existing facility at Chepstow and 750 jobs being moved to the Bristol area. Asda parent Wal-Mart revealed the UK grocer reported one of its strongest ever Christmas trading seasons, despite its international sales dipping 10.4% in December.
For the five weeks to 2 January, Wal-Mart reported net sales for its international division at £7bn. Group net sales for the period stood at £30bn. Wal-Mart said on a constant currency basis, international sales increased 8.3%.
Sainsbury’s is celebrating its best-ever Christmas performance after announcing a rise in third-quarter sales of 4.5%.Sales excluding fuel for the 13 weeks to 3 January were up by 4.5% on a like-for-like basis, buoyed by the company’s best-ever single day of business on 23 December. The supermarket giant said sales for its online home delivery service had grown by 27% over the quarter, taking a record number of orders in the week before Christmas. The retailer indicated that non-food had performed well over the past three months and that it had sold nearly three million toys over the course of its seven-day half-price toy promotion in November. Sainsbury’s, which did not provide figures for total sales, raised further cash over the quarter by selling the freehold on two stores for a combined £86m.
The Co-operative Group is to extend its use of the voice picking system 3iV Crystal to all of its distribution centres in the UK. It allows operators to work in a virtually paper-free environment, enabling faster picking rates and fewer errors.
