Down The Aisle... Tayto Snaps Up Local Crisp Maker
Tayto, Premier Foods, Findus, Glisten, Indulgent foods, Fair Trade’-style certification for European milk prices, Associated British Foods, Booker
UK snack group Tayto has snapped up local crisp maker Jonathan Crisp, the company behind the "crisp for snobs", for an undisclosed sum.
Premier Foods said it had a firm offer for its Martine Spécialités French bakery business worth 45m...offers announced last week for the other parts of Premier's speciality bakery group
Findus has asked other unnamed partners to take on the production of its frozen food for the UK market after the the collapse of its local manufacturing partner.
UK snacks and confectionery maker Glisten warned that half-year profits would fall after lower volumes led to the "under-recovery" of overheads. The company said "turbulent" market conditions had "dampened" sales and said a fall in volumes meant first-half operating profit would be lower than a year ago. Turnover for the six months to 31 December rose 6% despite "erratic" demand, Glisten said. Indulgent foods have grown in popularity this January as shoppers look for comfort during a depressing month, according to Waitrose. The supermarket said sales of carbohydrates - which usually suffer as shoppers look to diet after Christmas - have risen compared to last year. Pasta is up by 22% while rise and noodles sales have risen 34%, Waitrose said. Sausage sales have also increased 20%, hand-cooked crisps by 18% and lardons 56%.
A ‘Fair Trade’-style certification for European milk prices, designed to cover farmer cost, will soon making its way across EU member states, according to a leading farmers association. The European Milk Board (EMB), a lobby group representing dairy farmers across the EU, said yesterday that certified ‘Fair Milk’, already on retail shelves in Austria would soon be making its way across Europe.
Associated British Foods has produced a strong performance due to the weak pound, with a rise in first-quarter revenues of 21%, or 15% on a constant currency basis. The retail and manufacturing giant reported strong growth in its sugar, agriculture, grocery and ingredients business. And trading at its budget clothing retail chain Primark was in marked contrast with the performance of rivals such as Marks & Spencer, with sales up 18% thanks to an increase in retail space and good like-for-like sales growth. Its Allied Bakeries subsidiary, which includes Kingsmill bread had "continued to trade well, with an improvement in profit" although it did not provide details of sales. But ABF warned that growth at its premium teas business had slowed although the performance of Twinings Ovaltine was in line with expectations.
Booker, the wholesaler, said Christmas trading withstood the difficult economic climate. Total sales in the 16 weeks to 2 January rose 2.7% compared to the same period last year, the company said. Like-for-like sales not including tobacco jumped 5%, Booker said, while tobacco sales dipped by 0.9%.
