Down The Aisle... Poundland Extends Food Offer
Poundland, WA Baxter, GlaxoSmithKline, Paterson Arran, Reckitt Benckiser, Wholesalers
Poundland has extended its food staples offer to include milk and sugar. Last year Poundland introduced eggs to some stores alongside its other fresh food such as sandwiches. Poundland said: "Poundland sells a number of staple products including tea and coffee at an amazing price point of just £1, and the introduction of a 1.5kg bag of sugar simply extends the range."The single-price retailer will sell sugar in all of its stores nationwide and is this week trialling milk, which it will roll out to all its stores if the trial is successful.
WA Baxter saw its operating profits nearly wiped out in its last financial year. A combination of a costly integration of a Canadian acquisition, wet weather and the economic downturn took its toll on the family-owned company, which saw profits fall to £0.6m in the year to May 31, 2008, compared to £7.5m a year earlier. The massive slump was in spite of a 2.1 per cent rise in sales, to £116.4m. Audrey Baxter, executive chairman of WA Baxter, said: "These figures reflect what has been one of our most challenging years in recent times. "We found ourselves having to absorb many unplanned cost rises as raw material prices soared in the summer of 2007."
The world's second biggest pharmaceutical company is to radically shift its attitude to providing cheap drugs to millions of people in the developing world. In a major change of strategy, the new head of GlaxoSmithKline, Andrew Witty, has told the Guardian he will slash prices on all medicines in the poorest countries, give back profits to be spent on hospitals and clinics and – most ground-breaking of all – share knowledge about potential drugs that are currently protected by patents.
Paterson Arran has been named the first company to be part of the HGCA’s Supply Chain Partnership Innovation Showcase. The initative has been devised to help promote best practice in the cereals supply chain in innovation, cost and price, transport, materials testing and communication and collaboration. The Scottish biscuit manufacturer, based in Livingstone, was chosen for reducing the saturated fat content in its products by replacing the previously used palm oil with rapeseed oil. The range containing rapeseed oil was launched in 2007, as managing director Alan Hardie said the company predicted the healthy eating trend gathering pace. Earlier this week, the Foods Standards Agency launched a campaign to reduce consumers’ intake of saturated fats.
Reckitt Benckiser has shrugged off the economic malaise that is starting to worry consumer goods rivals by promising to expand sales at twice the rate of the market this year and increase net income by 8% to 10%, reports the Financial Times. Less than a week after Unilever said that the outlook was too uncertain to provide guidance on profits for 2009, Reckitt's chief executive Bart Becht said that he had "the right targets for the current market conditions".
Wholesalers Landmark and The Today's Group are continuing to prosper even though the credit crunch has turned into recession. Landmark Wholesale is said to have enjoyed a "healthy" 2008, with sales up by 4.7% over the previous year. Chilled and frozen foods were ahead by 22.5%,and despite "tough market conditions" the alcohol and tobacco categories both grew sales. Cider sales were up by 13.9% and cigarettes were ahead by 6.6%.
