Drinks Bulletin...Whyte & Mackay Looking For Happy Couple
Whyte & Mackay, Irish whisky Jameson's, Foster's, Fine wine trading, Scottish & Newcastle, Ciroc, Diageo, Coca-Cola Co

Whyte & Mackay has offered to create a personal, bespoke whisky for a couple who got engaged on Valentines Day. The brand's master blender Richard Paterson will create the whisky for the couple's wedding. The only catch? The couple must have the surnames Whyte and Mackay. “Marriage is about the perfect partnership — the union of two people who together, complete each other. To celebrate this, we are looking for a couple who got engaged on Valentine’s Day who have the names Whyte & Mackay."

Foster's is to retain its ailing wine business but is to split its Australian wine and beer businesses, the drinks giant has announced. The company said its planned changes will cost GBP27 (AUS$60m) a year but, it says will result in savings of over GBP45m (AUS$100m) a year from 2010. The move was announced  when the company released the results of a review of its wine assets which was started last June. One of the key conclusions of the review was that the wine giant had 'underperformed' but that there were 'substantial operational improvement opportunities'.

After a slow start, fine wine trading was "relatively strong" in January - partly driven by overseas investors snapping up bargains created by the weak pound. Liv-ex, the company which monitors activity in the sector, said turnover in its Fine Wine Index was up 27% on the same period in 2008. It closed 1.2% up at 209.42 - the first monthly rise in the index since August 2008. Year on year, the index has fallen 13.7%.
Falling sales at Scottish & Newcastle and a weaker beer market will this week be blamed for the pain being felt by its joint owners, European brewers Heineken and Carlsberg, when they release their 2008 results. Heineken and Carlsberg paid £7.8bn for Edinburgh-based S&N last April, but analysts say the brewer's performance has been relatively poor since then. More on this story

The rap artist and trend-setter Sean Combs, also known as P Diddy, is enjoying one of the most lucrative drink endorsement deals ever. His ground-breaking joint venture with Diageo, the world's largest alcohol group, entitles him to half the profits from US sales of premium vodka Ciroc, and is believed to be netting him millions of dollars a year. Sales of Ciroc - a French grape-based vodka invented by Diageo six years ago - trebled during the second half of 2008, thanks to his involvement as brand ambassador. Ciroc's success bucks a broader trend away from premium spirits to more affordable labels, Diageo says, and echoes that of Courvoisier cognac, which saw sales rocket after it featured in Busta Rhymes' 2003 hit "Pass the Courvoisier Part 2," a track to which Combs also contributed.

Diageo, the world's biggest alcoholic drinks group, reported a 21% rise in half-year earnings on Thursday but cut its profits growth target due to the global economic slowdown. The London-based maker of Johnnie Walker whisky, Smirnoff vodka and Guinness beer reported earnings per share of 45.6% for the six months to Dec 31, compared with a consensus of 43.0 and a range of 40.9 to 46.8p.

Coca-Cola Co. beat analyst estimates with its fourth-quarter profits, but one-time charges brought down results and revenues declined, according to a report Thursday by the company. Atlanta-based Coca-Cola, the world’s largest beverage company, said fourth-quarter net income fell 18 %to GBP699m, or 43 cents a share, as it took about GBP351m in net one-time charges, primarily for restructuring costs, asset write-downs and impairment charges at Coca-Cola Enterprises

Irish whisky Jameson's is challenging drinkers on how well they know their film endings as part of a new campaign in the run-up to St Patrick's Day on 17 March. The "Perfect Finish" campaign is aimed at strengthening Jameson's links with film awards and festivals. Consumers buying a Jameson's and mixer will be able to take part on the promotion and stand the chance of winning prizes including DVDs or a holiday to an iconic film destination such as Thailand, LA or Tokyo. The trivia promotion runs through February to 31 March in 4,000 bars. To take part, bars have to purchase two 1.5 litre or four 70cl bottles.
