Down The Aisle... Kerry Sees More Growth
Kerry Group, H.J. Heinz Co, L'Oreal, Health scares, Associated British Foods, Nestlé

Irish food company Kerry Group has posted a 7% rise in 2008 earnings and said it expected more growth by adapting its range of ingredients and flavours to suit budget-conscious consumers. More on this story

H.J. Heinz Co. has announced that profit for the third quarter increased 11% from last year, driven by gains from currency hedging as well as a lower effective tax rate of 26%. Earnings per share rose 12% and topped analysts' expectations, while quarterly revenues declined 7.5%, and missed consensus estimate. The company also reaffirmed its earnings guidance for fiscal 2009.

L'Oreal reported a 0.6% drop in like-for-like sales for the last three months of 2008.  The company  said that it would maintain its spending on product innovation and advertising.

A series of health scares in the US and internationally have prompted major food companies to re-examine their manufacturing processes in a bid to improve standards. Nestlé and Kellogg are among the multinational companies looking at their options in the US, according to the Financial Times, with both set to put an end to contract manufacturing and bring all production in-house. The news comes in the wake of a salmonella outbreak in the US that killed eight people, while a recent scare over contaminated peanuts saw thousands of products withdrawn from shelves. Major companies have also tightened up controls over imported ingredients and products from China, following the melamine milk contamination scandal that resulted in a number of deaths and thousands falling ill. The news comes with US legislators currently weighing up the creation of a dedicated food safety body along the lines of the European Food Safety Authority, which would work independently of the existing Food & Drug Administration.

Associated British Foods has warned that first-half profits at the manufacturing giant will show a drop from last year despite improved sales at its Allied Bakeries subsidiary. In a statement the company said Allied had “continued to trade well, with higher branded volumes and an improvement in profit” but warned that profits for the six months to 28 February would be “slightly lower”. Despite a good performance from Kingsmill baker Allied, the company’s grocery division, whose brands include Ryvita and Blue Dragon, is expected to show reduced overall sales for the period. Although drinks brands Twinings and Ovaltine both did well, the company said “substantially lower profit” at oils business ACH and a slump at sugar brand Silver Spoon would “outweigh progress elsewhere”. More positively, the company said its ingredients business had made major gains due in part to the weakness of the pound, while business at clothing arm Primark was said to be “ahead of expectations”. Full results for the period will be published on 21 April.

Nestlé defied its peers' gloomy prognoses for 2009, surprising both analysts and its competitors, by reassuring investors that it could produce organic sales growth of close to 5% this year. Paul Bulcke, chief executive of the Swiss food group, attributed the strong performance to Nestlé's strategy of selling cheap as well as expensive versions of the same product category. This includes products such as Nescafé coffee and Nido milk powder, which are sold in small sachets in emerging markets.
