Kogod Launches Two New Master’s Programs

Starting this fall, Kogod will offer a Master of Science in Finance (MSF) and Master of Science in Finance and Real Estate (MSF&RE).  The MSF and MSF&RE offer students a rigorous and intellectually sophisticated framework for analyzing decision-making in the areas of finance or in finance and real estate respectively.  The programs are specially designed for graduating or recently graduated bachelor-degree recipients who wish to develop or enhance technical skills in finance and real estate and professionals in support and/or finance-related positions who wish to cross-train into finance or real estate in order to increase their upward mobility.

Graduating students target a wide variety of organizations such as investment firms, commercial, development and investment banks, mortgage finance firms, corporations, and international development organizations, that strongly emphasize financial market development.

To learn more about the new degrees, contact Program Director Philip English at English@american.edu.

Kogod’s Largest Undergraduate Class

This fall Kogod welcomes its largest undergraduate class with 215 new freshmen students.  Far surpassing the goal of 165 new students, the fall 2008 class is also a highly talented and diverse group.  The new students will enter Kogod with an average GPA of 3.64 (up from 3.47 in 2007) and an average SAT score of 1224 (up from 1205 in 2007).

Within the class, 11 students have enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Language and Culture Studies (BLC) program launched in fall 2007.  Interest in the new Business and Music (BAM) program continues to grow as well among entering and prospective students.

Kogod Students Land Key Full-Time & Internship Opportunities in Changing Job Market

Many Kogod students are happily beginning their post-graduate school careers in a diverse array of organizations including Exxon Mobil, Ernst & Young, National Geographic Society, IBM Consulting, AOL,Wachovia Securities, Bearing Point, Deloitte & Touché, KMPG Advisory, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Lockheed Martin, Long and Foste, GSA, and White & Case. Others face an uncertain economy and slowed hiring among employers.

However, with the help of the Kogod Center for Career Development (KCCD), Kogod graduate students have managed to work around these impediments to land both full time and summer internship roles at some outstanding organizations.

As for graduates of the May 2008 class, many face numerous challenges in the market right now.  Some students, whose focus is marketing, for example, where the hiring tends to come on an as-needed basis, are still playing the waiting game.  Despite these challenges, many students have been able to draw upon the networking skills sharpened during the tenure as students and capitalize on the Kogod networks developed for career advancement.
