Mlive TV, the free-to-air satellite channel broadcast in the Middle East, has launched an SMS petition service called “Give Peace a Chance in the Middle East”.
Mlive says it isn’t in any way politically involved, but due to the fact its employees are mainly based in Beirut, the channel felt it couldn’t just ignore the horrors being inflicted upon local civilians before last week’s UN-brokered cease-fire.
The petition is particularly well adapted for countries which are poorly-equipped with computers with Internet connections, but with a high volume of mobile users.
Recently launched in June 2006, MliveTV is a free to air channel broadcast in the Middle East, North Africa and European countries where there is a high density of emigrant population from the Middle East and North Africa.
Mlive is an interactive entertainment channel (Music/Dance/ Fashion) which gives the opportunity to the public to participate via their mobile phones and the Internet.
You can sign the petition by sending an SMS to a unique number containing an alpha-digital root.
Send the word PEACE or the word PAIX to this short code number: +248 98
The petition is requesting "an immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities in the Middle East to avoid civilians being killed, wounded or forced to evacuate the bombarded areas". It will be eventually addressed directly to Mr. Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations Organization, with the full list of phone numbers in order to authenticate the signatures.
A counter of people signing the petition will be shown on Mlive 24/7.
Mlive has launched an appeal to all its media partners to join the petition by circulating this press release, either by mentioning the unique phone number or by creating their own signature process by SMS (More information can be obtained by sending an email to peace@mlive.tv)
For webmasters who would be willing to relay the petition on their website, Mlive can provide banners which are available on www.mlive.tv.
