Cable&Wireless Launch In-house Social Network…
Social networking’s on the rise – we all know about the success of Facebook and Myspace. But while IT departments try to cut out what they see as online distractions in the office, can companies use social networks to increase employee productivity and engagement?
Cable&Wireless think so, and so do we…
We’ve just helped to design and build their ‘Changes Are Made”’ intranet website. It’s all about cultural transformation within the business. Taking Cable&Wireless from a ‘good’ company - to a ‘great’ company to do business with and to work for.
The “Cam” site is a place for employees to meet and network with each other in a much more relaxed, less ‘businessy’ way than email or telephone. It’s an extension of batting ideas around the water cooler, but with colleagues all round the world instead of just those in your office!
And more than that, it’s about real business improvement from the ground up: the “Just Flamin Nuts” (JFN’s) area allows employees to post comments/ideas (OK complaints really!), then track the response - right through to a ‘resolution’.
C&W are also re-inventing their colleague directory. We’ve replaced this with the use of “CAMeos” - cartoon avatars that colleagues can design themselves – just like on the Wii!
There’s also a subtle form of knowledge management as users can look up other colleagues, based on all sorts of different factors. Same office? Same customers? Do they do the same job miles apart? Do they do the same things at the weekend? A CAMeo search is a less bureaucratic way to get in touch – and this more relaxed interaction will help new ideas and ways of working come about.
Phil Gripton, C&Ws Director of Cultural Transformation, said "Chemistry Digital have helped us create a vibrant and energetic way of focussing our cultural change programme, working with their team we have captured our business requirements and added Chemistry's creativity, it is quite a potent mix."
Next steps are to develop ways of pulling together groups with common interests, germinating relationships throughout the business in a way that used to be alien to a disparate corporate culture.
We’re even introducing games, because engaged and connected employees feel closer to their job - which means they’ll be keener to stay. Check out our Internal Comms Client Briefing Document to find out more.
